Your Committee
2012 Chairman — Kim Parkyn
 |
KIM PARKYN was initiated into Freemasonry in St. Marks Lodge No. 118 and has served as its Worshipful Master as well as servicing as its Secretary-Treasurer. He is also a Charter member of Internet Lodge of Research in Calgary and served as Worshipful Master in 2007–8, He is a 32° Scottish Rite Mason and served as the Thrice Puissant Grand Master in 2007. Kim has worked in the corporate and public Information Technology sectors for over thirty years and brings his years of solution development and technical understanding to lodge related activities.
Kim’s theme for 2012 is (tentatively) Back to the Future — Just about everybody knows some version of what George Santayana (1863–1952) said in The Life of Reason: Volume 1, Reason In Common Sense, “Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it.” What he was actually talking about was how one sets direction in one's life — sort of if you don't know where you've been, you can't know where you are going. It's the enlightened approach to becoming that better man. Indeed, that is what Santayana was really getting at:
Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When
change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is
set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
At the 47th Masonic Spring Workshop on 20 to 22 April 2012, we'll be looking at our past so we can plot our path for the future.
2011 Chairman
Stay tuned to these spaces as we will have much more to tell you about this exciting weekend.
BTW, just in case you wondered, our 2008 Keynote Speaker, Christopher Hodapp, was impressed with the Premier Masonic Conference for Rank and File Masons. You can read about it here.
